National Quality Council ushers in new Training Qualification

A new qualification called the Certificate IV in Training and Education (TAE10) has been endorsed by the National Quality Council on 5 May 2010.This means the new training qualification TAE will replace the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAA04) over the coming months. The TAE will be implemented under a transitional arrangement yet to be announced.
Trainers and assessors currently practising within the VET sector and holding the TAA are not required to upgrade to the TAE Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and will be considered as holding the equivalent qualification for the purposes of compliance with AQTF Element 1.4 of Standard 1. No new enrolments in Certificate IV in TAA will be allowed from May 2011.
The TAA qualification will remain an active training package for the purposes of supporting the Diploma of Training and Assessment (TAA50104) until it has completed a review process later this year.
It is the intention of EACH Training to apply for TAE10 soon with any further changes relevant to the implementation of this course to be updated on this website.
If you are currently undertaking TAA or intending to do so prior to May 2011 that your qualification will receive the same recognition as the new TAE. It is envisaged that while the TAE will replace the Certificate IV TAA it will not necessarily articulate nor will it replace the Diploma of TAA.
Help to prevent suicide

RECENT reports and health literature show suicide is the most underestimated community health problem in the world, says Darrell Hinga, training manager at EACH Social and community Health. He said demand for suicide intervention training had been increasing over the years since 2002. "Suicidal thoughts are triggered by all sorts of situations - work stress, home life, social interactions even environmental and global catastrophes,"he said.
"In the past 12 months EACH has provided training to more than 200 individuals, mainly professionnals, and has recruited an additional 10 trainers from all over the State."
He said EACH was planning to expand training to rural communities and other parts of Victoria. "Our workshop, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), is a two-day interactive program that includes teaching, discussion, video and skills practise."
ASIST aims to provide practical help for care-givers seeking to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. "Course participants have included people concerned about family and friends; counsellors, teachers and ministers; workers in health, welfare and justice; community volunteers; and emergency service workers."

-by Kath Gannaway (Mountain Views Mail)
AN EXCITING collaboration between business and community health has planted the seed for an innovative mental health initiative in Healesville.EACH has invested $155,000 to buy and redevelop the former Maroondah Garden Centre plant nursery.Super Soil purchased the landscape and nursery business earlier this year but was keen to sell off the nursery component.EACH’s manager of training and vocational enterprises Darrell Hinga said Super Soil’s willingness to partner up with his organisation and to offer a generous selling price had made the project possible.“They have invested a good deal of trust in an organisation that does not have an established reputation for being big players in the garden or nursery industry,” Mr Hinga said.“We were able to buy the business for $55,000 and the EACH’s board of management then committed to $100,000 in operating costs,” he said. The business will be called EACH Plants and Nursery Centre.“This project is about building up our capacity and response to working with people with a mental illness and getting them involved in a community venture which can lead to employment,” he said.He said there were significant barriers to employment for people who have a disability and mental health has its own barriers.“Providing experience in an industry which is recognised as having a demonstrated skills shortage was seen as a practical way of redressing some of those barriers,” he said.“There are two goals we would hope to achieve here. “One is to help reduce the stigma of mental health and its effects on people by saying this is what can be achieved if you give people a chance.”Mr Hinga said the nursery project was a good fit with EACH’s role as a mental health provider and that services it provided would be available to the people working in the nursery. “Medium to long-term, our plan is that we will be able to offer a horticultural qualification so we can link the training side by side with experience as a pathway to employment,” he said. The nursery will be a commercial enterprise run as a professional and competitive business. Manager Danny Wilcox has extensive experience in the nursery industry and said he is tremendously excited to be involved in the EACH project.Working with him is Elissa Hirst, also a qualified horticulturist, who is equally excited by the opportunity to work in an environment which has the potential to be personally rewarding and life changing for so many people. An open weekend will be held on 7 and 8 November and members of the public are invited to drop in, meet the new owners and their team and share ideas and aspirations for the new venture.
