Eastern Victims Assistance and Counselling (EVAC)

Support services

The Victims Assistance Program provides information, referral, and practical assistance.

It offers support to access the criminal justice system (for both reported and unreported violent crimes) and to lodge Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VOCAT) applications where appropriate.

Practical assistance is wide-ranging and can include:

  • Counselling
  • Referral to other services
  • Advocacy
  • Community education and training
  • Assistance with transport
  • Support at VOCAT hearings

Counselling

The counselling program offers short-term counselling to promote recovery from the negative effects of crime.

The criteria for counselling are that: - the person is the primary victim of violent crime - the crime occurred in Victoria - the crime occurred within the last two years - the crime was reported to police

Where an intervention order has been granted in the previous twelve months, counselling will be available.

Up to five hours of counselling can be offered. Longer term counselling needs are met through application to VOCAT.
