Demographic facts

The following facts are according to the 2006 Census for the City of Maroondah.

Settlement

  • 18.6% of residents are born overseas.  Of this group 51.1% (9,438 people) are born in a non-mainly-English speaking country. 
  • Between 2001 and 2006, the greatest increases were in the numbers of people born in India (up by 159 residents), China (up by 137 residents), Sudan (up by 135 residents) and Burma (up by 119 residents).
  • 338 residents (0.3%) identify as Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander and 43% of the Indigenous community are aged under 20 years.

Language

Of the 9.1% of residents who speak a language other than English (LOTE) at home, 15.2% (1,372 people) have a low level of English proficiency (speak English ‘not well’ or ‘not at all’). 

Religion

There are over 20 defined faiths (58 Places of Worship) including a wide variety of non-Christian faiths.

Education

  • There are 20 Primary Schools, 7 Secondary Colleges, 1 Tertitary institution (TAFE), and 3 Adult Education Services.
  • There are 17,167 school students living in Maroondah, of whom 1,803 were at pre-school, 8,373 were in primary/infants school, and 6,991 were at high school.
  • About 60% of all school students attend public schools (vs 55% for Melbourne), while there are 14% at Catholic schools (vs 21%), and 15% were at other private schools (vs 14%).

Income

The median family income was $1,280 a week, 3% more than Melbourne's $1,242.

Family life

  • There are 36,400 households in Maroondah with an average of 2.6 people in them.
  • The families in Maroondah fall into three main types – 'nuclear' families consisting of a couple with children make up 62% of families; couples without children, who tend to be either young or old, are 23% of families; and 14% are one parent families. In the Census, a family is a group of related people living in the same dwelling (or household).
  • Of Maroondah's 79,821 residents aged 15+ in 2006, 51% were married, 31% had never married, and 18% were once married, now separated (3.1%), divorPced (8.6%), or widowed (6.4%).

Employment

The main industries employing the Maroondah workforce in 2006 were: manufacturing, with 13% of workers; retail trade, 13%; health & social care, 11%; construction, 9%; education and training, 8%.  Maroondah's had 31% workers in the top two occupational bands (12% were managers, including farmers and small business operators, and 20% professionals), compared with 35% for Melbourne. The two lowest bands made up 14% of Maroondah's workers (5% were drivers / machine operators and 9% were labourers), while Melbourne had 15% in these occupations.
