The focus of the podiatry service is on education as well as treatment. Clients are encouraged to be responsible for maintaining their foot health.
The first appointment
Clients attending for their first appointment will have an assessment of their condition. This may include education and advice on the management of the problem, and treatment, if it is appropriate.
Clients who are ineligible for further treatment will be referred to other podiatry services.
Priority is given to clients who have a medical condition that significantly affects their feet, such as:
- diabetes
- peripheral vascular disease
- peripheral neuropathy
- chronic ulceration or infection
- people with foot deformities such as arthritis
- neurological conditions
- people using an anti-coagulant therapy.
Follow up appointments are not necessarily made at the time of treatment. We encourage people to take responsibility for monitoring their feet and contacting the podiatrist when they need further treatment.
Home visits are available for eligible clients.
What to bring to an appointment
The following items should be brought to the first appointment if available:
- a doctor’s referral or health professional’s letter A doctor’s referral is not required, but is helpful for the podiatrist when assessing problems.
- a written list of current medications
- footwear/shoes that are usually worn New footwear can be assessed for suitability before wearing.
- x-rays - orthoses (insoles).
