Family

For children and young people to thrive in our community, family connection and strong family bonds create the conditions that can make it less likely for young people to engage in substance use and other problem behavior.

Children and young people do well when;

  • They have opportunities to participate meaningfully in the responsibilities and activities of the family. This might look like being involved in making decisions that affect the young person.
  • They Experience positive feedback from parents, siblings and other family members about something that they have done well. Praise, encouragement and recognition are essential for positive social development of children
  • They have clear standards of behavior. Family rules and expectations about healthy beliefs and values are an important way for children and young people to understand and navigate the world around them.

Discipline is used rather than punishment.  Discipline is about learning and teaching and leads to self discipline. Harsh or severe punishment is about power and has negative effects on children and young people.
