In 2019, our Health Promotion Team commenced a partnership with Rowville Primary School, to conduct a 3 year demonstration project based on the Smarter Lunchroom Movement that has been successfully running in America in over 30,000 schools.
The project is based around behavioural insight strategies and focuses on increasing vegetable consumption amongst school students. One of the project aims is to incorporate the behavioural insights approach (also known as ‘nudges’) into the school canteen environment, alongside the Achievement Program framework.
On completion, the Health Promotion Team hopes to have resources adapted from the Smarter Lunchroom Movement, to suit the Australian school canteen environment, and to enable other schools to follow similar strategies. EACH also hopes to demonstrate a possible model to incorporate this into the Achievement Program framework.
Our Health Promotion Team has provided intensive involvement to the school, however, the project has been co-designed, with many of the initiatives being run by staff and students and has been supported by the Principal and School Council.
You can find out more about the healthy initiatives and also how the school adapted activities and introduced new ones to support healthy eating at home during Covid-19 restrictions here.
