Media Release: Accommodation Assistance Boost For Victims Of Violence

Woman and children escaping family violence will have greater access to refuge with EACH Housing acquiring accommodation, as part of the Victorian Government’s ‘housing blitz’.

A fund of $3.7M will allow for the acquisition of 9 units across Greater Dandenong, Yarra Ranges and Maroondah, with $2.6M being provided by The Department of Health and Human Services’ Rapid Housing Assistance Fund and EACH Housing contributing a further $1.1M.

This initiative comes in response to the priority recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Family Violence, aimed at increasing the availability of medium and long-term housing for people made homeless as a result of family violence.

In addition to the funds EACH Housing has committed towards the property purchases, a fundraising appeal will be setup on the EACH website to help ensure the properties are fully furnished and welcoming.

Women fleeing these circumstances often have little or nothing when they leave to seek refuge. We are committed to making these properties homes, not just houses for the residents,” said Lesley Tarves from EACH Housing.

EACH Housing will partner with its parent organisation EACH to provide support services to the tenants, including Family Violence Counselling, Family and Children Services, Youth Services, Victims of Crime Assistance and Family Relationship Support Programs.

This initiative acts on the prevention of homelessness of women and children needing housing. We are aiming to create physically and emotionally stable, secure environments, within which each tenant is able to maximise their recovery,” said Peter Ruzyla, CEO of EACH.
