Smile Squad provides free annual oral health examinations and free follow up care for all children attending Victorian public schools.
The Smile Squad program delivers on a Victorian Government commitment to improve the dental health of all Victorian public primary, secondary and special school students.
Following the successful proof of concept phase in 2019 and initial commencement in early 2020, Smile Squad was paused in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Services resumed in selected regional schools in Term 4, 2020, and the program is now expanding to schools in other parts of the state in Term 2, 2021.
We’re pleased to be rolling out Smile Squad services to schools in the Yarra Ranges region in Term 2 and will shortly commence services in the Maroondah and Knox areas.
Our Smile Squad Team’s first stop was Selby Primary School on Monday, 17th May 2021.
Smile Squad is the Victorian Government’s only school dental program, offering free care, from initial examinations to general treatment, excluding cosmetic dentistry.
“We know that good oral health is essential to your overall health and wellbeing, and we also know that good habits are learned early in life. So we are pleased to be delivering this service directly to children in the school environment, where through treatment and education, we can encourage good oral health habits and care,” said Raelene Tie, Oral Health Services Manager at EACH.
“Tooth decay is largely preventable; we want to make sure young people start out with and maintain healthy teeth and mouths. Being a mobile service, it makes things a little more convenient for parents,” said Raelene Tie.
The Department of Health and Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) are leading the development of Smile Squad and the service delivery component of the program is being managed by DHSV.
Smile Squad is committed to the high standards of safety and quality of all public dental services. Smile Squad is accredited to all relevant National Safety and Quality Health Services (NSQHS) standards. These standards provide a nationally consistent statement of the level of care consumers can expect from health service organisations.
When Smile Squad is ready to visit your school, your child/children will receive a consent form and dental pack including a toothbrush, toothpaste, and oral health brochure.
