While many services are facing challenges through the COVID-19 pandemic, there is still a lot of great health promotion work going on, including the Early Childhood space.
Kids on Mullum Early Learning Service is one of many long daycare centres participating in the Smiles 4 Miles program delivered by EACH, that includes an Eat Well Message, promoting nutritious food and eating habits that contribute to healthy growth and development in children.
Last month before the lastest restrictions were reintroduced, the Service hosted a Master Chef Day for the children to enjoy! The children had an amazing experience exploring different foods and recipes.
The Toddler One room made Sultana Scones and the children measured, poured, and mixed the ingredients together and enjoyed their yummy scones for afternoon tea!
In the Toddler Two-room, they made healthy fruit smoothies. Each child had the opportunity to choose which fruit they would like in their smoothies, while also discussing the health benefits of each fruit!
Junior Kinder made delicious pizza muffins for Lunch! The children enjoyed creating their own pizzas, with the ability to use the ingredients they wanted on their muffins.
The Kinder room explored one of their Educator’s homeland food, roti. The children discussed the ingredients used to create the roti, which was wheat flour and water. The children enjoyed using the Belan (rolling pin) to roll out their dough on the Chakla (wooden board), which was then placed into the electric pan to cook.
Smiles 4 Miles is an oral health promotion program (an initiative of Dental Health Services Victoria) that works to improve the oral health of children, their families and the wider community.
