Defying all odds: Joan's independence

Imagine, for a moment, the unsettling prospect of losing your independence.

Picture a life where the ability to pursue your passions, and navigate the world on your own terms is eroding.

This loss of independence can be disorienting and disheartening.

Such was the reality faced by Joan, a resilient 76-year-old with worsening vision impairment, as she grappled with the upkeep of her home, financially maintaining her beloved assistance dog, Iza, and preserving her cherished independence.

“I struggled with making ends meet to provide food for my dog,” said Joan. “I was embarrassed inviting friends into my home, given the struggle of keeping it clean and free of clutter from me falling. Preserving my independence felt like a constant uphill battle.”

Joan faced challenges finding suitable assistance until she contacted EACH, which became a transformative turning point in her life. Responding empathetically to Joan’s plight, EACH swiftly tailored a comprehensive Home Care Package, custom-fitted to her unique needs.

This holistic package encompassed an extensive range of services, surpassing expectations to ensure Joan’s home remained immaculately maintained, transcending her physical limitations. From regular cleaning and gardening to meticulous home maintenance, no detail was overlooked.

To further nurture Joan’s wellbeing, monthly shopping excursions were organised, serving not only to address her essential needs but also to cultivate a sense of community engagement and belonging.

“EACH has done really well for me. While I don’t anticipate miracles, whenever I express a genuine need, it is promptly and efficiently addressed without hesitation.”

The prompt response and reliability of the service provide Joan with peace of mind, especially during critical moments when she required immediate assistance after leaving the hospital.

“When I was discharged from the hospital, there were certain ‘lady’ essentials I required, and with just one phone call, they were delivered to me the very next day.”

Emphasising her fierce independence, Joan values the personalised support she receives from EACH.

“The caregivers go above and beyond, taking care of small yet significant tasks such as organising belongings, changing light bulbs, and even putting up pictures.”

Notably, Joan’s faithful assistance dog, Iza, is also thoughtfully provided for within the Home Care Package. From the procurement of nutritious dog food to biannual visits to the veterinarian, EACH ensures Iza’s wellbeing, thereby enabling Joan to maintain her freedom of mobility and independence.

The dedicated staff and carers at EACH infuse Joan’s life with joy and laughter, cultivating an atmosphere of unwavering support that nurtures her emotional wellbeing.

“The staff are great for a chat and a laugh. Everyone is really friendly to talk to.”

Through a partnership with Vision Australia, EACH has also provided Joan with technological assistance, offering her an iPad and iPhone to learn online grocery ordering and banking.

Reflecting on the impact of the package, Joan states, “I am a very happy possum. If I didn’t have access to this service, my home would have more cobwebs, I would struggle to feed Iza and pay his vet bills, and I wouldn’t be as confident with the cleanliness of my house.”

EACH has not only lightened Joan’s burdens but also granted her the freedom to pursue her passions, such as reading her favourite audiobook and volunteering three days a week.

Sally Rohrich, Older Adults Case Manager, says the impact of Home Care Packages goes beyond just maintaining independence; it can be a life-changing experience for clients.

“EACH’s comprehensive approach to home care brings about a remarkable transformation in the lives of clients like Joan. It goes beyond maintaining independence; it has the power to change their lives. By supporting Joan in preserving her independence, she’s gained a sense of security and empowerment to navigate life on her own terms.”

EACH’s Home Care Packages offer personalised and flexible support to individuals who require assistance to maintain their independence at home, regardless of their level of care needs.
