How to help your children develop kitchen confidence through age-appropriate cooking activities

Cooking with children encourages them to develop lifelong skills to eat well. This guide shows you age-appropriate ways your children can participate in the kitchen.

Ages 3-5 years

Ages 7-9 years

  • Using blenders, food processors (supervised)

  • Cleaning up

Ages 9+ years

  • Independently reading and following a recipe
  • Chopping, dicing, grating and slicing with a sharp knife (supervised)
  • Boiling pasta or rice
  • Cooking pancakes and eggs on the stovetop (supervised)
  • Using the oven (supervised)
  • Cleaning up
