When you’ve walked the path yourself, you bring something special to the people you support. That’s what inspired Shereen’s next chapter.

Shereen came to Each looking for support, and stayed to help others find it too.

Shereen’s journey with Each started during a difficult time in her life. In 2017, she was carrying the weight of past trauma and mental health challenges, which led her down the path of addiction.

When she reached out to Each’s Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) program , she found a community of people who were caring and passionate about helping her take steps towards recovery.

The AOD team worked closely with Shereen, helping her unpack her experiences, rebuild confidence, and find a way forward. As she began to feel stronger and more hopeful, she knew she wanted to give back one day.

“That’s why I applied for a role in payroll at Each,” Shereen said, highlighting the positive experiences she’d had.

In the payroll team, Shereen had the opportunity to work across the organisation, giving her a real insight into how Each operates and the many people that bring it to life.

But over time, she felt a pull toward something more personal. Something that honoured her own journey and could help others going through similar experiences.

“I had a bit of an awakening,” she shared. “Based on my own lived experience, my passion was to get into the AOD sector.”

She spoke openly about these goals with her leaders and was met with encouragement every step of the way.

“I was really grateful. I just find that Each is so supportive in that way, and they’ve really helped me.”

Today, Shereen is an AOD trainee — studying whilst working alongside customers. She said it’s shown her just how different everyone’s journey is, and how important it is to meet people where they’re at.

“It’s not one size fits all,” she explained. “Everyone has a different way of recovering and getting help.”

Her traineeship is also giving her the chance to explore different parts of the AOD program, helping her decide which direction she’d like to go.

Shereen’s story shows how lived experience and professional growth come together at Each. She’s now working in a space that truly matters to her, and we think that’s something worth celebrating.
